Your ability to choose a lifting system depends on your knowledge

What items should you choose and how should an efficient and safe lifting system be arranged? It all depends on your knowledge of the various accessories and expertise in putting them together

There is now a very wide choice of accessories for arranging a lifting system: the CARTEC catalogue also includes hundreds of items that can allow you to create your own customised composition that suits the needs of the individual load and the preferences of each operator to a tee.

The anchoring connection points and the elements chosen to create the system as a whole, play a critical role in the creation of a lifting system: this is why it is important to know how to make informed choices.

Hooks, chains, standard or swivel eyebolts, straps, slings and so on are available with different shapes, capacities and characteristics: sometimes it’s a matter of detail and sometimes of more visible elements but, in any case, it’s a matter of those differences that… make the difference. Whether we are talking about technical issues or just about habits and preferences, it is good practice to learn the differences between the various components and understand the pros and cons of the solutions you adopt.

The factors you need to bear in mind

The shape, weight and centre of gravity of the load as well as the operating conditions are factors that you need to take into consideration.

It is not enough to know just one lifting procedure or just one specific type of accessory: to ensure that lifting operations are really efficient and above all safe, you need to take into account a series of factors that are not limited to the lifting system components, but also concern the load itself and the environmental conditions in which the load is being handled.

To lift and handle a load correctly and safely, you need to analyse its shape, weight and centre of gravity: in this way you can define the correct lifting points. The operating conditions are also of fundamental importance.

Although they might appear to be of secondary importance, the operating conditions are actually crucial: are there very high or very low temperatures? Are there any corrosives? Are we, for example, in a setting exposed to sea air? Or where chemicals are active? Does the load undergo other forms of handling?

The importance of training

In order to assist qualified staff in acquiring the necessary knowledge, we have created training tools at different levels

Given the extent and complexity of the variables that we need to consider – ranging from the technical features of the various lifting accessories to their use in combination with each other in complete systems, the existing operating conditions as well as identifying the appropriate lifting points and analysing the load – acquiring all the necessary knowledge is no simple matter.

For this reason, a few years ago Carcano established the CARTEC Safety Academy with courses at different levels and with the specific aim of assisting operators and providing them with all the notions and knowledge required to operate safely and competently.
We have also created an App where qualified staff can consult our catalogue and find help in configuring a complete and efficient lifting system.
